Young Church – Disciples

WOW – doesn’t Wednesday come around so quick!!!

Rev Kevin has another story from the Book of Mark, one of the Gospels in the New Testament in the Bible.

The disciples were the students of Jesus during his ministry, which sometimes means only the Twelve Apostles Most of the attention in the gospels is given to a specific group of disciples called by Jesus on the top of a mountain and commissioned by him as the Twelve Apostles.

These men are:

  • Simon, called Peter
  • Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter
  • James (called the son of Zebedee by Mark and Matthew)
  • John (Mark and Matthew identify him as the brother of James, son of Zebedee)
  • Philip
  • Bartholomew, named Nathanael in John
  • Matthew (whom the Matthew evangelist identifies as a publican), named Levi in Luke and Mark
  • Thomas
  • James, the son of Alphaeus
  • Simon, called a zealot in Mark, Matthew, and Luke
  • Judas Iscariot
  • Jude
  • Thaddaeus, called Thaddaeus by Mark, Lebbaeus Thaddaeus by Matthew, and Judas, brother of James by Luke
  • Paul became an apostle after Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Alan talks to us this afternoon, about why we should come to church, and what we might miss out on. Just like Thomas did, when he missed Jesus appearing to the disciples, as we read about in the Book of John

John 20:24-29

Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
