  1. Hi Alan

Re Church having been in operation for 143 years – small section from ‘Annals of The Macdonald Memorial U F Church;’ printed around 1924, concerning the ‘birth’ of our Church, as follows:

“The first occasion that the Lord’s Supper was observed was the month of October 1873 when the Rev Mr Ogilvy conducted the service. There were 63 Communicants present. Mr Ogilvy had been superintending the work of the Mission for nearly three months and had seen it launched most auspiciously upon the tide of time when he asked the Presbytery to release him from the strain of the extra work.”

By the end of 1873, it states in the ‘Annals’ that no less than 300-450 people assembled to worship God Sunday by Sunday at both diets of worship.

The 1873 date is recorded in one of the stained glass windows above the organ.

Another of the windows above the organ records 1923 as the Golden Jubilee of the Church. A Service to celebrate the occasion was held on 28 October 1923 and the ‘Annals’ was written to mark that occasion.

It might be 143 years since the Foundation Stone was laid for the present building, but the Church had been in existence for three years before that; so we should be celebrating 150 years in 2023, which isn’t that long; not three years later.

You can start planning the Anniversary Service now!

    Peggy
