Romans 12:9–21 teaches the shape of Christian love. Matthew 16:21–28 teaches the cost of following Jesus. Together they form a single call: to love as Christ loved, and to follow as Christ leads.
Call to Worship
We gather in the presence of God, who calls us to sincere love, to take up our cross, and to follow Christ with our whole lives.
Lord, as we come before You, quiet our hearts, open our minds, and draw us into Your transforming love. Make this time holy by Your Spirit.

Holy God, You are love in all its fullness, truth in all its clarity, and mercy in all its depth.
We come seeking Your presence. We come longing for Your guidance. We come hoping to be shaped by Your Word.
Draw near to us as we draw near to You. Speak to us through Scripture, renew us through prayer, and strengthen us to walk the way of Christ.

Prayer of Confession
Lord Jesus Christ, You call us to deny ourselves, yet we cling to comfort. You call us to take up our cross, yet we avoid sacrifice. You call us to follow You, yet we choose our own path.
Forgive us for the times when our love has lacked sincerity, when we have repaid evil for evil, when we have failed to live at peace with others.
Forgive us, renew us, and restore us. Shape our hearts to reflect Your love and our lives to reflect Your cross.

First Bible Reading — Romans 12:9–21
A sincere love. A transformed life. A community shaped by Christ’s compassion.
Romans 12:9-21
9 Love must be completely sincere. Hate what is evil, hold on to what is good. 10 Love one another warmly as Christians, and be eager to show respect for one another. 11 Work hard and do not be lazy. Serve the Lord with a heart full of devotion. 12 Let your hope keep you joyful, be patient in your troubles, and pray at all times. 13 Share your belongings with your needy fellow Christians, and open your homes to strangers.
14 Ask God to bless those who persecute you—yes, ask him to bless, not to curse. 15 Be happy with those who are happy, weep with those who weep. 16 Have the same concern for everyone. Do not be proud, but accept humble duties.[a] Do not think of yourselves as wise.
17 If someone has done you wrong, do not repay him with a wrong. Try to do what everyone considers to be good. 18 Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody. 19 Never take revenge, my friends, but instead let God’s anger do it. For the scripture says, “I will take revenge, I will pay back, says the Lord.” 20 Instead, as the scripture says: “If your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them a drink; for by doing this you will make them burn with shame.” 21 Do not let evil defeat you; instead, conquer evil with good.
Brief Reflection: Paul paints a picture of Christian love that is active, costly, and deeply practical. This is love that blesses enemies, seeks peace, and overcomes evil with good. It is not sentimental—it is sacrificial.

Second Bible Reading — Matthew 16:21–28
Jesus Speaks about His Suffering and Death
21 From that time on Jesus began to say plainly to his disciples, “I must go to Jerusalem and suffer much from the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law. I will be put to death, but three days later I will be raised to life.”
22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “God forbid it, Lord!” he said. “That must never happen to you!”
23 Jesus turned around and said to Peter, “Get away from me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my way, because these thoughts of yours don’t come from God, but from human nature.”
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you want to come with me, you must forget yourself, carry your cross, and follow me. 25 For if you want to save your own life, you will lose it; but if you lose your life for my sake, you will find it. 26 Will you gain anything if you win the whole world but lose your life? Of course not! There is nothing you can give to regain your life. 27 For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will reward each one according to his deeds. 28 I assure you that there are some here who will not die until they have seen the Son of Man come as King.”
Brief Reflection: Jesus reveals the path He must walk—suffering, rejection, and the cross. Then He turns to His disciples and says: “If anyone would come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” This is the heart of Christian discipleship.
Short Reflection / Message
Title: “The Cross‑Shaped Life”
Romans 12 shows us what Christian love looks like. Matthew 16 shows us where Christian love leads.
Together they teach us three truths:
1. Love is sincere when it costs something.
Paul’s commands—bless those who persecute you, live at peace, overcome evil with good—are not easy. They require self‑denial, patience, humility, and courage.
2. Following Jesus means choosing His way over our own.
Peter wanted a Messiah without a cross. We often want discipleship without sacrifice. But Jesus says the cross is not optional—it is central.
3. The cross‑shaped life is the life that truly leads to joy.
Jesus says that whoever loses their life for His sake will find it. The world tells us to protect ourselves; Christ tells us to give ourselves. And in giving, we discover life in all its fullness.
Closing Thought: Romans 12 shows us how to live. Matthew 16 shows us why we live that way. Together they call us to a life shaped by Christ’s love and Christ’s cross.
Prayer of Thanksgiving
Gracious God, We thank You for Your Word that challenges, comforts, and transforms. We thank You for Christ, who walked the way of the cross for our salvation. We thank You for the Spirit, who strengthens us to follow Him.
Thank You for the love that never fails and the grace that never ends.

Lord, we pray for the world: For peace where there is conflict, for justice where there is oppression, for hope where there is despair.
We pray for our nation and community: Guide leaders with wisdom, protect the vulnerable, and inspire us to be people of compassion.
We pray for the church: Make us a community shaped by sincere love, patient in suffering, faithful in prayer, and bold in witness.
We pray for those in need: The sick, the grieving, the lonely, the anxious, the weary, the searching. Bring healing, comfort, and strength.
We pray for ourselves: Help us to take up our cross daily and follow Christ with courage and joy.
