BELLSHILL CENTRAL PARISH CHURCH

WHAT BELONGS TO GOD?

A Self-Led Prayer Service

Based on the Revised Common Lectionary readings for the day

Exodus 33:12–23 | Psalm 99 | 1 Thessalonians 1:1–10 | Matthew 22:15–22

ENTERING GOD’S PRESENCE

Find a comfortable place where you can be quiet and undisturbed. You may wish to light a candle, have your Bible beside you, or simply sit in silence.

There is no need to hurry. This is time set aside for God.

Whatever the day has brought, whatever worries you carry, and whatever questions remain unanswered, bring them with you into this time of prayer.

God welcomes you as you are.

Take a few moments to become still. Allow the distractions of the day to settle and your thoughts to turn towards God.

Opening Prayer

Gracious and loving God,

You are the source of my life, the strength of my faith, and the hope that sustains me.

As I come into your presence, quiet my mind and still my heart. Help me to put aside the things that distract me, the worries that weigh me down, and the questions that remain unanswered.

Remind me that I do not walk alone, for you have promised to be with your people.

Open my heart to your Word. Renew my spirit through your Holy Spirit. Teach me to recognise your goodness, trust in your faithfulness, and offer my life in your service.

May this time of prayer draw me closer to you and help me to recognise your presence in the ordinary moments of life.

Through Jesus Christ my Lord.

Amen.

HYMN: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, LORD GOD ALMIGHTY

Spend some time singing or listening to this familiar hymn of praise.

As you do so, reflect on God’s faithfulness, mercy, forgiveness, and enduring love.

Allow the words of the hymn to become your own prayer of thanksgiving.

A PRAYER OF PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING

Almighty God,

I praise you because you are holy, faithful, and full of mercy.

You are greater than anything I can imagine, yet you draw near to me in love.

You are the creator of heaven and earth. The changing seasons proclaim your glory. The beauty of creation speaks of your wisdom. The changing circumstances of my life remind me of my need for your unchanging grace.

I thank you for your faithfulness through the generations.

I thank you for those who have encouraged me in my faith, for those who have prayed for me, and for those who have helped me discover your love.

I thank you for the ordinary blessings of life: for family and friendship, for food and shelter, for moments of laughter, for opportunities to help others, and for the people who make a difference in my life.

I thank you for Jesus Christ, who showed me what it means to live in obedience to you, who welcomed the forgotten, challenged injustice, and revealed the depth of your love.

Forgive me when my worship becomes routine, when my prayers become hurried, and when I give more attention to the demands of the world than to the voice of your Spirit.

Forgive me when I take your blessings for granted or fail to recognise the opportunities you place before me.

Turn my heart towards you again.

May my faith be sincere, my actions reflect your goodness, and my life bring glory to your name.

To you belong the glory, the honour, and the praise, now and for ever.

Amen.

READING: PSALM 99

Read Psalm 99 from your Bible, slowly and thoughtfully.

As you read, notice the repeated declaration of God’s holiness.

This psalm reminds us that God is sovereign, righteous, and faithful. His authority is unlike the power exercised by human beings. He calls his people to worship him, to trust in him, and to live according to his ways.

After reading, spend a few moments reflecting on these questions:

  • What does God’s holiness mean to me?
  • Where have I experienced God’s faithfulness in my life?
  • What might it mean for me to live more fully in the light of God’s justice and goodness?

A Prayer of Response

Holy God,

You are worthy of my praise.

You are faithful when I am uncertain, patient when I struggle, and merciful when I fail.

Help me to worship you not only with my words but with the way I live.

May your holiness shape my choices. May your justice influence how I treat others. May your mercy remind me to forgive.

Help me to trust you when the way ahead is unclear and to remember that your faithfulness does not depend upon my circumstances.

Teach me to walk in your ways and to honour you in all that I do.

Amen.

READING: EXODUS 33:12–23

Read Exodus 33:12–23 from your Bible.

In this passage, Moses speaks honestly with God. He knows that the journey ahead will be difficult, and he recognises that he cannot lead God’s people in his own strength.

He longs to know God’s ways and asks for God’s presence to accompany him.

Moses understands something important: it is not enough to know where we are going. We need to know that God is with us.

There are times when we face uncertainty about the future. We may have difficult decisions to make, responsibilities that feel overwhelming, or circumstances that are beyond our control.

We may long for clear answers when God seems to offer only the promise of his presence.

Yet the promise that God will accompany his people remains a source of hope.

A Prayer for God’s Guidance

Faithful God,

Like Moses, I sometimes find myself looking towards an uncertain future.

There are decisions I need to make, questions I cannot answer, and circumstances I cannot control.

Sometimes I want to know exactly what lies ahead. I want reassurance that everything will work out as I hope.

Yet your Word reminds me that I do not need to know everything about the journey if I know that you are with me.

Give me the wisdom to recognise your guidance, the patience to wait when answers do not come quickly, and the courage to take the next step in faith.

When I feel uncertain, remind me of your faithfulness.

When I feel overwhelmed, help me to remember that I do not carry every burden alone.

When I am tempted to rely entirely upon my own strength, teach me to depend upon you.

Go before me in the days ahead. Help me to follow where you lead and to trust that your grace will be sufficient for whatever I must face.

May your presence be my confidence and your love be my peace.

Amen.

READING: MATTHEW 22:15–22

Read Matthew 22:15–22 from your Bible.

In this Gospel passage, Jesus is asked a question intended to trap him. The religious leaders want to know whether it is right to pay taxes to Caesar.

Jesus responds by asking whose image appears on the coin. When they answer that it is Caesar’s image, he tells them to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.

It is a familiar passage, but it invites an important question:

What belongs to God?

Reflection: What Belongs to God?

We can easily think of our possessions, responsibilities, money, and commitments as things that belong to us.

We have homes to maintain, bills to pay, families to care for, work to complete, and decisions to make.

These things matter. Jesus does not suggest that we should ignore our responsibilities in the world.

Instead, he asks us to think more deeply about where our ultimate loyalty belongs.

The coin carried Caesar’s image. But Scripture reminds us that human beings are created in the image of God.

Our lives themselves are a gift from God.

Our time can be used in his service. Our gifts and abilities can become a blessing to others. Our relationships can reflect his love. Our choices can demonstrate his justice and compassion.

Giving to God what belongs to God is about much more than money. It is about offering him our whole lives.

It is about the way we treat someone who disagrees with us.

It is about whether we notice the person who is lonely.

It is about whether we speak up when someone is treated unfairly.

It is about the patience we show when life becomes difficult and the kindness we offer when nobody is watching.

It is also about the way we respond when we feel anxious about the future.

We cannot control everything that happens around us. We cannot always understand the decisions made by those in authority. We cannot know what tomorrow will bring.

But we can choose where we place our trust.

We can choose to live with integrity.

We can choose to practise kindness.

We can choose to make room for prayer.

We can choose to offer our gifts in the service of others.

And we can choose to remember that, whatever changes around us, God remains faithful.

Take a little time to reflect on these questions.

What am I holding on to that I need to place in God’s hands?

What gifts has God given me that I could use more faithfully in his service?

Is there an area of my life where I have placed something else before God?

What might change if I truly remembered that I belong to God?

There is no need to rush towards an answer. Simply allow the questions to remain with you as you spend time in God’s presence.

A Prayer of Commitment

Loving God,

My life belongs to you.

Forgive me when I become so absorbed in the demands of everyday life that I forget the One who gives me life.

Forgive me when I place my own interests first, when I judge others too quickly, or when I fail to act with kindness and compassion.

Help me to offer you my time, my talents, my resources, and my relationships.

Show me where I can make a difference.

Help me to recognise your image in every person I meet, even when that person thinks differently from me or sees the world in a way I do not understand.

Give me courage to stand for what is right, humility to admit when I am wrong, and grace to treat others with dignity.

May my faith be more than words.

May it be seen in my actions, my decisions, and my willingness to serve.

Take what I have and what I am, and use it for your glory.

Amen.

READING: 1 THESSALONIANS 1:1–10

Read 1 Thessalonians 1:1–10 from your Bible.

Paul writes with gratitude for the faith of the Thessalonian Christians. Their lives have become an example to others because their faith is accompanied by love, perseverance, and hope.

Their faith is not simply something they profess. It is something they live.

This passage invites us to consider the difference our faith makes to the people around us.

Faith is not measured only by how often we attend worship or how confidently we speak about God. It is also reflected in our patience, our generosity, our willingness to forgive, and our readiness to help those in need.

We may never know how much a small act of kindness means to another person. We may never see the full effect of a prayer offered in love or an encouraging word spoken at the right moment.

Yet God can use these ordinary acts of faithfulness to bring hope into the lives of others.

A Prayer for a Faith That Makes a Difference

God of hope,

Thank you for the example of those whose faith has encouraged me.

Thank you for the people who have shown me your love through their kindness, patience, generosity, and compassion.

Help me to become an encouragement to others.

When I meet someone who is struggling, help me to listen.

When I see someone who is lonely, help me to offer companionship.

When someone makes a mistake, help me to respond with understanding rather than judgement.

When I have the opportunity to serve, help me not to look for reasons to turn away.

Strengthen my faith when life is difficult.

Deepen my love when relationships are challenging.

Renew my hope when the future seems uncertain.

May the people I encounter see something of your goodness through the way I live.

Help me to remember that I do not need to do extraordinary things to serve you faithfully. Often, the greatest opportunities are found in the ordinary moments of each day.

Make my life a quiet witness to your love.

Amen.

A TIME OF SILENT PRAYER

Set aside a few moments for silence.

You may wish to remain seated comfortably, close your eyes, or simply rest your hands quietly.

There is no need to find words for every thought or feeling. Allow yourself to rest in God’s presence.

Bring to God the things that are troubling you.

Bring the people you love.

Bring the decisions you are facing.

Bring the hopes you hold for the future.

Bring the things you find difficult to understand.

Remember that prayer is not only about speaking to God. It is also about making room to listen, to reflect, and to become aware of his presence.

Spend a little time considering these words:

God is with me.

God knows me.

God loves me.

My life belongs to God.

Remain in silence for as long as you need.

A Prayer After Silence

Faithful God,

Receive the prayers I have offered in silence.

You know the things I struggle to express and understand the burdens I carry.

Help me to trust you with what I cannot control, to act faithfully where I can make a difference, and to recognise your presence in every circumstance.

Give me peace where I am anxious, wisdom where I am uncertain, and courage where I am afraid.

May I leave this time of quiet with a renewed awareness of your love.

Amen.

PRAYERS FOR THE WORLD AND OTHERS

Prayer for the Church

God of every generation,

I pray for your Church throughout the world.

Strengthen congregations that are growing tired. Encourage ministers and church leaders who carry heavy responsibilities. Give wisdom to those who must make difficult decisions.

I pray especially for the Church of Scotland and for the congregations of our own area.

As our churches consider their future and the communities they are called to serve, guide them with your wisdom.

Where there is uncertainty, give peace.

Where there are different opinions, give patience and understanding.

Where change brings sadness, give compassion.

Where new opportunities emerge, give courage.

Help us to remember that the Church is not simply about buildings, traditions, or structures. It is about people seeking to follow Jesus Christ and share his love.

May our churches remain places of prayer, welcome, friendship, and service.

Help us to reach out to those who feel forgotten, welcome those who have never felt part of a church, and offer hope to those who are struggling.

May our faith be visible not only in what we say but in what we do.

Amen.

Prayer for the World and Those in Authority

Lord of all the earth,

I pray for our troubled world.

Give wisdom to national leaders, local representatives, and all who make decisions affecting the lives of others.

Guide those working for peace in places affected by war and violence.

Protect those caught up in conflict through no choice of their own.

Comfort families who have lost loved ones and those who have been forced to leave their homes.

Strengthen those working to provide food, medical care, shelter, and protection.

I pray for communities facing poverty, injustice, discrimination, and uncertainty.

Where power is abused, bring accountability.

Where people are divided by hatred, build understanding.

Where voices are ignored, help justice to be heard.

Where despair has taken hold, let hope begin to grow.

Help me not to become so overwhelmed by the world’s troubles that I stop caring.

Show me the part I can play, however small, in building a more compassionate and peaceful world.

Teach me to be generous in my concern, faithful in my prayers, and willing to act when opportunities arise.

Amen.

Prayer for Bellshill and the Local Community

Loving God,

I bring before you the people of Bellshill and the surrounding communities.

I pray for those who are struggling to make ends meet, for families worried about rising costs, and for people who are unsure how they will manage the weeks ahead.

I remember those who are lonely, those who have become isolated, and those who feel that nobody notices their struggles.

I pray for children and young people, for parents and carers, for teachers and support staff, and for everyone working to give the next generation a safe and hopeful future.

I remember those who care for others in hospitals, care homes, community services, and family homes.

Give them strength when they are tired and encouragement when their work seems thankless.

Bless our local community organisations, charities, volunteers, and support groups.

Thank you for those who give their time to help others and those who quietly offer kindness without expecting recognition.

Help me to be attentive to the needs around me.

May I become someone who notices, someone who listens, and someone who acts.

May Bellshill Central Parish Church continue to be a place where people encounter friendship, practical help, and the love of Christ.

Show me how I can play my part in serving my neighbours and making our community a place of greater kindness and hope.

Amen.

Prayer for Those Who Are Unwell

God of compassion,

I pray for all who are unwell in body, mind, or spirit.

Be near to those waiting for test results, facing treatment, recovering from illness, or living with long-term conditions.

Give strength to those who are exhausted and peace to those whose thoughts will not settle.

Guide doctors, nurses, carers, and all who provide treatment and support.

Give wisdom to those making difficult decisions and comfort to those who feel frightened or overwhelmed.

I remember those whose illness is hidden from others and those who find it difficult to ask for help.

May they encounter kindness, understanding, and practical support.

Where there is pain, bring comfort.

Where there is fear, bring reassurance.

Where there is loneliness, bring companionship.

Where there is uncertainty, give peace for the next step.

Help me to be sensitive to those who are struggling and ready to offer practical help when I can.

Amen.

Prayer for Those Who Are Grieving

God of love and tenderness,

I pray for all who are grieving the loss of someone they love.

For those whose loss is recent, be their comfort.

For those whose grief has lasted many months or years, continue to hold them in your love.

For those facing anniversaries, empty chairs, and memories that bring both joy and sorrow, remind them that they do not have to carry their sadness alone.

You know that grief can come unexpectedly. A familiar song, a photograph, a place, or a special day can bring back memories and feelings that are difficult to express.

Be near to those who are finding life difficult without someone who mattered deeply to them.

Give patience to those who are learning how to live with loss.

Surround them with people who will listen without judgement and offer companionship without demanding that they feel better.

Help me to be thoughtful towards those who are grieving, remembering that there is no single way to mourn and no timetable for sorrow.

May the promise of your love bring hope, even when answers are hard to find.

Amen.

Prayer for Family, Friends, and Personal Concerns

Heavenly Father,

I bring before you the people who are closest to me.

Thank you for those who bring happiness, encouragement, and companionship into my life.

I pray for those who are facing difficulties, those who are worried about their future, and those who need strength for the days ahead.

You know the relationships that bring me joy and those that cause me concern.

Where there is misunderstanding, help me to listen.

Where there is hurt, help me to seek healing.

Where there is distance, show me how to build bridges.

Where I need to apologise, give me humility.

Where I need to forgive, give me grace.

I bring before you the decisions I must make, the responsibilities I carry, and the questions for which I have no answers.

Help me to distinguish between the things I can change and the things I must place in your hands.

Give me wisdom for today rather than anxiety about tomorrow.

Help me to trust that your presence will accompany me through whatever lies ahead.

I place my family, my friends, my hopes, and my concerns into your loving care.

Amen.

A Prayer of Surrender

Gracious God,

You have heard the prayers I have spoken and know the concerns that remain in my heart.

I cannot solve every problem, answer every question, or carry every burden.

But I can place these things into your hands.

Help me to trust you with the things I cannot change and to act faithfully where I can make a difference.

Give me a generous heart, a patient spirit, and a willingness to serve.

May I recognise your presence in the ordinary moments of life and remember that even the smallest act of kindness can become a blessing in your hands.

May my faith be strengthened, my hope renewed, and my love for others deepened.

Through Jesus Christ my Lord.

Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Take a moment to reflect on the words of the prayer Jesus taught his disciples.

Then pray slowly, allowing each phrase to speak to your own circumstances.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth,
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever.

Amen.

CLOSING HYMN: ALL MY HOPE ON GOD IS FOUNDED

Spend some time singing or listening to All My Hope on God Is Founded.

As you reflect on the hymn, remember that our security does not depend entirely upon the things we possess, the positions we hold, or the circumstances in which we find ourselves.

Our deepest hope rests in God, whose love remains faithful through every season of life.

CLOSING PRAYER

Faithful and loving God,

Thank you for this time set aside to be still in your presence.

Thank you for your Word, which challenges me, encourages me, and reminds me of the life to which you call me.

Thank you that I do not need to have every answer before I can trust you.

As I return to the responsibilities of everyday life, help me to carry something of this quietness with me.

When I feel anxious, remind me of your presence.

When I feel discouraged, renew my hope.

When I encounter someone in need, help me to respond with compassion.

When I face a difficult decision, give me wisdom.

When I am tempted to put my own interests first, remind me that my life belongs to you.

Help me to live faithfully, love generously, and serve willingly.

May the people I meet encounter something of your goodness through my words and actions.

I place the coming days into your hands, trusting in your unfailing love.

Through Jesus Christ my Lord.

Amen.

A BLESSING FOR THE DAYS AHEAD

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ sustain me.

May the love of God surround me.

May the wisdom of the Holy Spirit guide me.

May I know God’s presence in moments of joy and sorrow, in times of certainty and doubt, and in the ordinary tasks of everyday life.

May I have courage to do what is right, patience to listen to others, and compassion for those who are struggling.

May my faith be evident in the way I live, and may my life bring glory to God.

Amen.

A FINAL THOUGHT

What belongs to God?

My heart. My life. My gifts. My hopes. My future.

I may not be able to control everything that happens in the world around me, but I can choose whom I trust, whose voice I follow, and how faithfully I live out my calling.

May I give to God what is God’s, offering not only my words but my life, not only my Sunday worship but my everyday actions, and not only what is convenient but all that I am.

May I go forward in faith, live in hope, and serve in love.
