Longing for God’s House^[a]

84 How I love your Temple, Lord Almighty!
²     How I want to be there!
    I long to be in the Lord’s Temple.
With my whole being I sing for joy
    to the living God.
³ Even the sparrows have built a nest,
    and the swallows have their own home;
they keep their young near your altars,
    Lord Almighty, my king and my God.
⁴ How happy are those who live in your Temple,
    always singing praise to you.

⁵ How happy are those whose strength comes from you,
    who are eager to make the pilgrimage to Mount Zion.
⁶ As they pass through the dry valley of Baca,
    it becomes a place of springs;
    the autumn rain fills it with pools.
⁷ They grow stronger as they go;
    they will see the God of gods on Zion.

⁸ Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty.
    Listen, O God of Jacob!
⁹ Bless our king, O God,
    the king you have chosen.

¹⁰ One day spent in your Temple
    is better than a thousand anywhere else;
I would rather stand at the gate of the house of my God
    than live in the homes of the wicked.
¹¹ The Lord is our protector and glorious king,
    blessing us with kindness and honor.
He does not refuse any good thing
    to those who do what is right.
¹² Lord Almighty, how happy are those who trust in you!

83 Do^(A) not keep silent, O God!
Do not hold Your peace,
And do not be still, O God!
² For behold, ^(B)Your enemies make a ^[a]tumult;
And those who hate You have ^[b]lifted up their head.
³ They have taken crafty counsel against Your people,
And consulted together ^(C)against Your sheltered ones.
⁴ They have said, “Come, and ^(D)let us cut them off from being a nation,
That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”

⁵ For they have consulted together with one ^[c]consent;
They ^[d]form a confederacy against You:
^6 (E)The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites;
Moab and the Hagrites;
⁷ Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek;
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
⁸ Assyria also has joined with them;
They have helped the children of Lot. Selah

Psalm 82

A psalm of Asaph.

¹ God presides in the great assembly;
    he renders judgment^(A) among the “gods”:^(B)

² “How long will you^[a] defend the unjust
    and show partiality^(C) to the wicked?^[b](D)
3 Defend the weak and the fatherless;^(E)
    uphold the cause of the poor^(F) and the oppressed.
⁴ Rescue the weak and the needy;
    deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

⁵ “The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing.^(G)
    They walk about in darkness;^(H)
    all the foundations^(I) of the earth are shaken.

⁶ “I said, ‘You are “gods”;^(J)
    you are all sons of the Most High.’
⁷ But you will die^(K) like mere mortals;
    you will fall like every other ruler.”

⁸ Rise up,^(L) O God, judge^(M) the earth,
