37 Don’t be upset because of evil people.
Don’t be jealous of those who do wrong.
²Like the grass, they will soon dry up.
Like green plants, they will soon die away.

³Trust the Lord and do good.
    Live in the land and enjoy its safety.
⁴Enjoy serving the Lord.
    And he will give you what you want.
⁵Depend on the Lord.
    Trust him, and he will take care of you.
⁶Then your goodness will shine like the sun.
    Your fairness will shine like the noonday sun.

⁷Wait and trust the Lord.
    Don’t be upset when others get rich
    or when someone else’s plans succeed.
⁸Don’t get angry.
    Don’t be upset; it only leads to trouble.
⁹Evil people will be sent away.
    But people who trust the Lord will inherit the land.
¹⁰In a little while there will be no more wicked people.
    You may look for them, but they will be gone.
¹¹People who are not proud will inherit the land.
    They will enjoy complete peace.

¹²The wicked make evil plans against good people.
    They grind their teeth at them in anger.
¹³But the Lord laughs at the wicked.
    He sees that their day is coming.
¹⁴The wicked draw their swords.
    They bend their bows.
They try to kill the poor and helpless.
    They want to kill those who are honest.
¹⁵But their swords will stab their own hearts.
    Their bows will break.

¹⁶It’s better to have little and be right
    than to have much and be wrong.
¹⁷The power of the wicked will be broken.
    But the Lord supports those who do right.
¹⁸The Lord watches over the lives of the innocent.
    Their reward will last forever.
¹⁹They will not be ashamed when trouble comes.
    They will be full in times of hunger.
²⁰But the wicked will die.
    The Lord’s enemies will be like the flowers of the fields.
    They will disappear like smoke.
²¹The wicked people borrow but don’t pay back.
    But those who do right give freely to others.
²²Those people the Lord blesses will inherit the land.
    But those he curses will be sent away.

²³When a man’s steps follow the Lord,
God is pleased with his ways.
²⁴If he stumbles, he will not fall,
because the Lord holds his hand.

²⁵I was young, and now I am old.
    But I have never seen the Lord leave good people helpless.
    I have never seen their children begging for food.
²⁶Good people always lend freely to others.
    And their children are a blessing.

²⁷Stop doing evil and do good.
    Then you will live forever.
²⁸The Lord loves justice.
    He will not leave those who worship him.
He will always protect them.
    But the children of the wicked will die.
²⁹Good people will inherit the land.
    They will live in it forever.

³⁰A good person speaks with wisdom.
    He says what is fair.
³¹The teachings of his God are in his heart.
    He does not fail to keep them.
³²The wicked watch for good people.
    They want to kill them.
³³The Lord will not take away his protection.
    He will not judge good people guilty.

³⁴Wait for the Lord’s help
and follow him.
He will honor you and give you the land.
And you will see the wicked people sent away.

³⁵I saw a wicked and cruel man.
He looked strong like a healthy tree in good soil.
³⁶But he died and was gone.
I looked for him, but he couldn’t be found.

³⁷Think of the innocent person.
    Watch the honest one.
The man who has peace
    will have children to live after him.
³⁸But sinners will be destroyed.
    In the end the wicked will die.

³⁹The Lord saves good people.
    He is their strong city in times of trouble.
⁴⁰The Lord helps them and saves them.
    He saves them from the wicked
    because they trust in him for protection.

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord.

¹I have a message from God in my heart
concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:^[b]
There is no fear of God
before their eyes.

²In their own eyes they flatter themselves
    too much to detect or hate their sin.
³The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful;
    they fail to act wisely or do good.
⁴Even on their beds they plot evil;
    they commit themselves to a sinful course
    and do not reject what is wrong.

⁵Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the skies.
⁶Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
    your justice like the great deep.
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.
⁷How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
⁸They feast on the abundance of your house;
    you give them drink from your river of delights.
⁹For with you is the fountain of life;
    in your light we see light.

¹⁰Continue your love to those who know you,
    your righteousness to the upright in heart.
¹¹May the foot of the proud not come against me,
    nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.

Psalm 35

A Psalm of David.

¹Plead my cause, O Lord, with my adversaries;
    fight those who fight me.
²Take hold of the large shield and small shield,
    and rise up for my help.
³Draw the spear and javelin
    against those who pursue me.
Say to my soul,
    “I am Your salvation.”

⁴May those who seek my life
    be ashamed and humiliated;
may those who plan my injury
    be turned back and put to shame.
⁵May they be as chaff before the wind,
    and may the angel of the Lord cast them down.
⁶May their way be dark and slippery,
    and may the angel of the Lord pursue them.

⁷For without cause they have hidden their net for me in a pit,
    which they have dug without cause for my soul.
⁸Let destruction come on him without warning,
    and let the net that he hid ensnare him;
    let him fall into it, to his destruction.
⁹My soul will be joyful in the Lord;
    it will rejoice in His salvation.
¹⁰All my bones will say,
    “Lord, who is like You,
who delivers the poor from a stronger one,
    the poor and the needy from the one who robs them?”

¹¹Witnesses intent on violence rose up;
    they accused me of things I knew nothing about.
¹²They rewarded me evil for good,
    the bereavement of my soul.
¹³But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth;
    I humbled my soul with fasting;
and my prayer returns to my own heart.
¹⁴I paced as though he were my friend or brother;
    I bowed down lamenting,
    as one who mourns for a mother.
¹⁵But in my adversity they rejoiced and gathered together;
    assailants gathered together against me, though I was unaware;
    they tore me apart and did not stop;
¹⁶with hypocritical mockers in feasts,
    they gnashed on me with their teeth.

¹⁷Lord, how long will You look on?
    Rescue my soul from their destructions,
    my life from the lions.
¹⁸I will give You thanks in the great congregation;
    I will praise You among a mighty people.
¹⁹May my deceitful enemies
    not rejoice over me;
nor may those who hate me without cause
    wink with their eye.
²⁰For they do not speak peace,
    but they devise deceitful matters

    and said, “Aha, aha, our eye has seen it.”

²²This You have seen, O Lord; do not be silent;
    O Lord, be not far from me.
²³Rouse Yourself and awake for my judgment,
    for my cause, my God and my Lord.
²⁴Judge me, O Lord my God, according to Your righteousness,
    and may they not rejoice over me.
²⁵May they not say in their hearts, “Ah, we have our soul’s desire.”
    May they not say, “We have swallowed him up.”

²⁶May those who rejoice at my harm be ashamed

may they be clothed with shame and dishonor
    who magnify themselves against me.

    shout for joy and be glad;
may they say continually, “The Lord be magnified,
    who delights in the peace of His servant.”

34 I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

²My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.

³O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.

⁴I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

⁵They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

⁶This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

⁷The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

⁸O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

⁹O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.
